To many citizens, simply watching Australian rules football on TV at home or the pub is enough of a thrill ride and emotional roller coaster to keep us satisfied. The games can be fast paced and high scoring and the outcome often affects how one goes about the rest of their week – either with the head held high after a victory or avoiding all forms of human contact until a loss can be avenged the next game. It may sound hard to believe but there’s a way to make these games even more exciting, by placing AFL betting wagers to have a direct financial impact on the game. Here are a few things to know about a few of the different bet types available to you.
Head to Head
The head to head bet in Australian league rules football involves simply picking the winner. While that may sound pretty easy, there are also varying odds associated with the head to head bet. What this means is that a team that is heavily favored and by all accounts will have a walk in the park in winning the game will cost more of a risk just to win $100. Bettors may have to risk $200-$400 dollars on the team winning outright just to clear a $100 profit and to many punters the risk isn’t worth the reward.
Line Bets
Whereas head to head bets involve simply picking a winner, a line bet requires the team winning by a certain number of points. There is a slippery slope involved with this as just picking the winner doesn’t win the wager but at the same time the risk is much less than in a head to head bet meaning it takes $100-$115 to win $100.
Margin Betting
Margin betting is basically picking the winner and then choosing whether the game will be close or a blowout. A typical line bet is something in the area of -7 and it can be heartbreaking losing by a point or two. A margin bet on the other hand is like the roulette wheel where you can pick a winning spread of 1-15, 16-29, 30+ or something along those lines.
Pick Your Own Line
There are times in AFL betting when the spread is unveiled and the punter feels the oddsmakers are simply off on it. In these occassions the option to pick your own line can be very lucrative, especially if you shift it towards the underdog or away from the favored team. For instance, a line of -2 might pay out one to one but if you set your own line at -8 the same bet might pay 3/1 odds.
Halftime / Fulltime
Another way to get excitement out of the entire rugby game is to make a bet that depends on halftime as well. You can pick a halftime and endtime spread that the teams must hit but with a payout that is much better than the conventional bet.
There are dozens of ways to win money on the Australian Football League, the best way to do so is become familiar with the teams and players and look for discrepancies in the spreads offered.
